Connect three houses to gas, water and electricity — nine wires, no crossings. For any connected drawing in the plane with no crossings, vertices minus edges plus faces is 2 — however the drawing writhes. The surface keeps this number, not the drawer.
Houses never wire to houses, so no face can be a triangle — every face spends at least four edge-sides and each edge has only two to give. Six vertices buy eight edges; the ninth has no face to live in.
