Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
Connect three houses to gas, water and electricity — nine wires, no crossings. You will lay eight and the ninth will flare, wherever you bend it: Euler’s V − E + F = 2 books five faces for nine wires, houses never wire to houses so every face costs at least four sides, and 4F ≤ 2E reads 20 ≤ 18 — false before your first wire was drawn (Euler 1750; Kuratowski 1930 made this board half of planarity’s entire law). The plane pays for eight. The ninth was never yours — and this instrument ends at that wall, on purpose.
For any connected drawing in the plane with no crossings, vertices minus edges plus faces is 2 — however the drawing writhes. The surface keeps this number, not the drawer.
Houses never wire to houses, so no face can be a triangle — every face spends at least four edge-sides and each edge has only two to give. Six vertices buy eight edges; the ninth has no face to live in.
Every graph that refuses to lie flat hides one of exactly two minimal culprits — the five-clique or the utilities board. This instrument is not an example of the wall; it is half of the wall’s entire statement.
Every handle a surface grows lowers its Euler number by two and raises the wire budget by four. One handle: the cap moves from 8 to 12, and K3,3’s nine wires land flat with room to spare.
The Noa Edition’s second wall moves the method from the board to the surface the board is drawn on. Room one invites the attempt — wire, bend, let the machine deal layouts, every conviction counted by a detector that runs on the actual curves — and room two names the invariant: not the wires’ cleverness but the plane’s Euler characteristic, which had priced the ninth wire out before the first was drawn. The door is exact — one handle, demonstrated by the same auditor — and no workaround closes the page; the impossibility is the finding, as it was for The Fifteen’s parity. What networks are is The Web’s subject; what surfaces permit is this instrument’s; and the donut that saves the nine wires here is the same one The Last Torus watches die as a phase space — the rack’s handle, worn two ways.
