The planets’ distances follow a simple ladder — and it did what coincidences shouldn’t: it pointed at an empty rung between Mars and Jupiter, and in 1801 a world was found there. Place the planets, search the gap. Then add the first planet the ladder never saw.
A rule, not a law: no force in it, only a pattern in seven numbers. It found Ceres in the gap at n = 3 and missed Neptune by 29% at n = 7 — a fit to a short series, read as if it were dynamics.
A fit that predicted once was mistaken for a law. Titius–Bode matched the known planets, got Ceres by interpolation, and failed out of sample by 29% the moment dynamics delivered a planet it had not been tuned on. The salvage is the warning itself, shared with The Epicycle (accuracy bought with parameters) and with Vega’s The Envelope (a derivation the count will not follow). Its pair in this edition is The Caloric — a right answer for a wrong reason, which stayed right.
