Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
Build a wheel that turns itself forever and takes work out for nothing. Load the arms so the heavy side hangs further out; it will surge — and then the very geometry that helped it down lifts an equal weight on the way up, and the total energy line stays flat. Kill the friction and it runs forever, honestly, still gaining nothing — because forever was never the wall, profit is. Energy is conserved because the laws don’t change with time (Noether, 1918); a lone-bath ratchet averages to zero (Feynman, 1963); a sorting demon pays kT ln 2 per bit to erase its notebook (Landauer, 1961). The only door is the ledger itself. This instrument ends at the wall, on purpose.
Emmy Noether’s theorem: every continuous symmetry of the laws of motion yields a conserved quantity — and the symmetry of time (the laws are the same today as tomorrow) is exactly energy conservation. A wheel cannot gain energy from nothing because its physics does not know what time it is; run the same release a century later and the curves overlay. This is why the perpetual-motion wall stands, not merely that it does.
Rolf Landauer’s 1961 result: erasing one bit of information in a thermal environment costs at least kBT ln 2 joules — irreversibly dissipated as heat. This is the bridge between information theory and thermodynamics: information is not just abstract, it is physical.
Entropy never falls in an isolated system, so no engine draws net work from a single heat bath — the second-kind wall behind the ratchet’s honest zero.
The oldest workshop in the cycle: Bhāskara drew the self-turning wheel in 1150, Villard sketched his mallets in 1235, and every century since has rebuilt it. Stevin closed the mechanical case in 1586 with a picture; Helmholtz put conservation on a firm footing in 1847; and Noether said why in 1918 — energy is conserved precisely because the laws do not care what time it is. The demon’s loophole took longest to shut: Szilárd and Landauer showed that information is physical and erasing it costs heat, so the sorter’s ledger closes at kT ln 2 a bit. The demon lives in The Demon and the pawl-and-vane in The Ratchet; entropy’s arrow is The Arrow’s. The Motion is the audit that reuses their physics and delivers the books. As with every wall in this edition, the impossibility is the finding.
