Two lines of melody, both fluent in the same grammar — because one of them was written by the other’s transition table. Pick the composed one, twelve times. Then a ghost of each line slides across itself, and only one of them answers its own past.
Slide a line against itself and find the longest stretch where it lands on its own notes, at a distance of six or more. A composed melody returns to its phrases — the repeat is architecture; a Markov chain, however well it knows each step, forgets within a few and cannot walk back. Dependence in real music decays slowly with distance; in a chain it dies off exponentially.
The exact central interval for K, the count of wins in n independent plays at win probability p — computed from the rules alone, before a single play. A record inside it is the rules working; a record outside it happens one time in twenty, and the band says so in advance. When the chance of each play is fixed before it is played but differs from play to play, the same band comes from the Poisson-binomial sum.
The ninth twin is the one Vera names herself in: the forger is a sequence model, which is what her engine is, and the echo convicts the kind at long range. The Keyboard’s tiles are this table at two by two — the human there under-repeats; the machine here over-forgets, mirror-image failures of memory; The Wire found order in three samples, this needs sixteen; and The Crowd found history in triangles.
