Double a city and it needs about 80 % more road but makes about 125 % more of what people make when they meet — wages, patents, and crime. Grow a city on the night map from a hamlet of ten to ten million and measure both: the engine lays every road and walks every resident’s day, and the exponents fall out of the geometry.
A city of twice the people makes about 21.15 ≈ 2.2 times the wages, patents and crime, on about 20.85 ≈ 1.8 times the road — more per head and less per head, from one doubling.
Settled area grows as Nα; roads fill it as √(area·nodes); everyone reached within a day’s travel along those roads gives the contacts. While a day crosses the whole town, everyone meets everyone and contacts grow as N².
The Lemuel grammar: a quantity as a power of body size. On log–log axes every allometric law is a straight line whose slope is the exponent b — fitted, on every instrument of the edition, from the sizes you visit.
The eighth size turns The Heart’s network inside out. A body’s vessels deliver less per cell as it grows (metabolism ∝ M3/4); a city’s roads let each resident meet more people as it grows, because the roads grow slower than the people. Infrastructure is sublinear, output superlinear, and the same 1/6 separates both from linear. Where The Hub grows a network by preferential attachment, this one is laid in space and measured against the people it serves; who ends up living beside whom is The Enclave’s question.
