Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
A crowd of oscillators — fireflies, neurons, metronomes, a power grid — each ticking at its own pace, each tugging the others toward the mean. Below a critical coupling the spread of frequencies wins and the dots smear all the way round the phase circle: no rhythm, r ≈ 0. Raise K past K_c and synchronization ignites — the dots clump into one arc and pulse together, the order-parameter arrow grows, r → 1. Spontaneous collective rhythm, out of nothing but a nudge.
Each oscillator runs at its own frequency ωᵢ and is pulled toward every other by the coupling K. With global coupling this is the whole model — Kuramoto’s solvable distillation of Winfree.
The population’s mean phasor. r measures coherence: 0 when the phases are scattered, 1 when they march in lockstep. It is the arrow drawn on the circle and the number on the readout.
Because the coupling is global, every oscillator feels a single pull toward the mean phase ψ, of strength Kr. The pull grows with the order it has already created — the feedback that makes the transition sharp.
The ignition point. Widen the frequency spread g and you raise the bar; sharpen it and the chorus locks for almost any nudge. The blue line on the bifurcation inset.
Above threshold the coherence rises continuously from zero — a second-order phase transition. Exact for a Lorentzian spread; the silver curve the live point tracks.
Only oscillators slow enough to be captured join the cluster; |ωᵢ| > Kr keep drifting around the rim. The locked fraction is on the readout — and a bimodal spread can refuse to pick one rhythm at all.
This is the rack’s synchronization instrument — order in timewhere The Flock (INST·10) is order in space: Vicsek aligns headings on a plane, Kuramoto aligns phases on a circle, the same emergence on orthogonal axes. And it is a textbook continuous phase transition — the order parameter r is to coupling K what The Threshold’s (INST·04) magnetization is to temperature, the frequency spread playing the role of thermal disorder. Order from disorder, like The Walk (INST·19) and The Arrow(INST·18) — but here the order is a shared now: fireflies that flash as one, neurons that fire in step, a grid that holds 50 Hz, traders that herd into one trend. The Bimodal break is the honest footnote — pull the population into two camps and the single rhythm never comes, the way real crowds fracture before they sing.
