Heat as an invisible fluid, conserved, falling from hot to cold like water over a mill — and on that false premise Carnot finds the limit of every engine ever built. Run the engine and watch the theory work. Then stir water in the dark.
Carnot’s waterfall: caloric C, conserved, falls from the hot body to the cold one, and the motive power is the caloric times the height of its fall, as water turns a mill. False as physics — heat is not conserved — yet exact as bookkeeping, because the quantity his axioms define is Q/T.
The most any engine working between two temperatures can turn to work. Carnot showed in 1824 that it depends on the two temperatures alone; written on the absolute scale it is the second law’s first number, and it survived the caloric it was derived from.
What Carnot’s caloric turns out to be. Clausius named it in 1865 as Q/T — the quantity conserved in a reversible cycle — and Boltzmann counted it. The Demon owns it; here it is only the name of the fluid that was never there.
A theory built on a fiction measured a true limit. Caloric is a false ontology — heat is energy in transit, and work can make it — yet the bound Carnot derived from it is exactly what the second law gives. The residual is Joule’s equivalent, which no conserved fluid explains. The Demon owns entropy; this stage keeps the pre-entropy derivation and its convicting drum. In the edition, The Rung is its pair — a right fit for a wrong reason — and The Ash the other invisible substance that was right in its bookkeeping.
